The project aims to empower underserved communities in Malang through a partnership between Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Memayu Hayuning Foundation (MHF), and Teach a Man to Fish (TAMTF), with support from TSD. It focuses on creating inclusive programs for seniors, individuals with autism, single parents, and abuse survivors, while promoting social entrepreneurship and community-driven initiatives to address local challenges and improve quality of life.
The University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), in collaboration with SCII Hub, is launching a comprehensive initiative to address the needs of underserved populations and those requiring assistance in Malang. This project aims to foster social entrepreneurship and empower grassroots communities to develop businesses that serve these groups while providing crucial support services.
Malang's elderly population faces significant challenges, with approximately 13% (110,116 people) of the city's residents being over 60 years old. To address their needs, we propose:
Community Clubhouse: A centralized facility offering various activities and services for seniors.
Decentralized Mini-Gyms: Accessible fitness centers throughout the city, equipped with age-appropriate exercise equipment.
Well-Equipped Activity Centers: Spaces for social interaction, learning, and recreation.
Care-Giving and Support Services: Trained professionals providing in-home care and assistance.
Senior-Friendly Spaces: Redesigning public areas to be more accessible and comfortable for the elderly.
Intergenerational Exchange Programs: Facilitating interactions between youth and seniors to promote understanding and mutual learning.
Autism awareness and support in Indonesia, particularly in Malang, require significant improvement. Our initiative includes:
Autism Awareness Campaigns: Educating the public to reduce stigma and promote understanding.
Parent Support Groups: Providing resources and community for parents of children with autism.
Specialized Education Programs: Collaborating with schools to implement inclusive education strategies.
Vocational Training: Preparing individuals with autism for meaningful employment opportunities.
Recognizing the challenges faced by single parents and survivors of abuse, we propose:
Safe Houses: Providing temporary shelter for those escaping abusive situations.
Legal Aid: Offering pro bono legal services for custody battles and protection orders.
Childcare Services: Affordable, quality childcare to support working single parents.
Counseling and Therapy: Mental health support for survivors of abuse and their children.
Job Training and Placement: Assisting single parents in achieving financial independence.
To sustain these initiatives, we will establish an incubator program to support social enterprises focused on serving underserved populations. This will include:
Mentorship Programs: Connecting aspiring social entrepreneurs with experienced business leaders.
Seed Funding: Providing initial capital for promising social enterprise ideas.
Business Development Workshops: Offering training in business planning, marketing, and financial management.
UMM will conduct ongoing research to identify emerging needs and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented programs. This will ensure that our initiatives remain relevant and impactful.
By addressing these critical issues, UMM and SCII Hub aim to create a more inclusive and supportive community in Malang, improving the quality of life for all residents, particularly those who are often overlooked or underserved.
